Movie Review: Kick 2

Title: Kick 2
Release Year: 2015
Director: Surender Reddy
Genre: Action, Comedy
Runtime: 149 minutes
Rating: 6.0/10

“Kick 2” is the sequel to the highly successful 2009 film “Kick” and is an action-comedy directed by Surender Reddy. With Ravi Teja reprising his role as the fearless and fun-loving hero, the film attempts to deliver the same high-energy action and quirky humor that made its predecessor a hit. However, despite its efforts, “Kick 2” struggles to match the excitement and charm of the original and falls short in several areas.

The story follows the life of a carefree and thrill-seeking man, Kalyan (Ravi Teja), who is on a mission to find a lost treasure. Along the way, he gets entangled in a series of comic and action-packed situations, including a battle with a notorious villain. The film’s narrative takes a predictable route, filled with over-the-top action sequences, punchy one-liners, and comedic moments. While these elements were successful in the first film, they feel repetitive and less impactful in the sequel.

Ravi Teja once again shines in his role as Kalyan, bringing his trademark energy, humor, and mass appeal to the character. His comic timing and larger-than-life persona are undoubtedly the highlights of the film. However, even his performance cannot fully overcome the flaws in the writing and direction. The character feels too familiar, and his antics, though entertaining at times, lack the freshness that made the first “Kick” film so enjoyable. The lack of depth in the script also prevents Kalyan from having a meaningful emotional arc, making his journey feel more like a series of disconnected events rather than a cohesive story.

The film’s villain, played by an antagonist who is supposed to be menacing and powerful, fails to make a lasting impact. The character lacks the same charisma or presence that a strong villain should have, and as a result, the stakes of the story are never truly felt. The conflict between the hero and the villain feels superficial and fails to build the tension that is necessary for an action-packed thriller.

Surender Reddy’s direction, while energetic, lacks the sharpness needed to keep the audience fully engaged. The screenplay is often uneven, with moments of forced comedy and exaggerated action sequences that detract from the overall pacing. The film struggles to find the right balance between humor and action, with the two elements sometimes clashing rather than complementing each other. The action scenes, though plenty, feel repetitive and predictable, lacking the excitement of the first film.

The cinematography is decent, capturing the grand action set pieces and scenic locales, but the visuals do not elevate the movie in any significant way. The film’s production values are solid, but the overall look and feel of the movie don’t stand out in a memorable way.

The music, composed by Devi Sri Prasad, is one of the better aspects of the film. The soundtrack features a few catchy tunes that add energy to the proceedings, though none of the songs have the same lasting appeal as the tracks from the first “Kick.” The background score complements the action, but it doesn’t have the same impact as the original film’s music.

“Kick 2” performed decently at the box office, mainly due to the popularity of Ravi Teja and the franchise’s established fan base. However, it didn’t live up to the commercial success or the critical acclaim of the first film. Audiences expecting a fresh take on the story were left disappointed, as the film rehashed much of what had already been done in the first “Kick.”

In conclusion, “Kick 2” is an average entertainer that relies heavily on Ravi Teja’s charm and energy to keep it afloat. While it offers plenty of action and comedy, it ultimately fails to deliver the same excitement and novelty that made the first film so successful. If you’re a fan of Ravi Teja or the “Kick” franchise, you may find enjoyment in the film, but it’s not likely to leave a lasting impression.
